DARTS AROUND ESSEX – FEBRUARY 2005

 RACKLIFF’S 3RD

Ingatestone & District prides itself in having some great lady dart players, and this seasons Whitbread Rosebowl produced some excellent darts with no less than four previous winners vying for the title. It was Elaine Rackliff’s pictured right  (Charlie’s Mob) night winning the trophy for a record third time after beating competition debutant Caron elly (Oddfellows Arms) two-nil in a superb final. The losing semi-finalists were Pauline Donat (White Horse Filly’s) and Lynne Wood (Victoria A). The 51st running of the Honeyball Cup produced an entertaining competition with this short format, 401 best of 3–legs. Winning through to the final was Rising Sun Dragon’s Ray Curtis and Red Beret’s Steve Grimsey, and it was Steve who looked favourite in the opening blows, but failed to hit a winning double, and Ray came through a two-nil victor. The losing semi-finalist was Paul Williams (Charlie’s Mob) and John Hansell (Oddfellows Arms). Eddie Smith (Crown B) and Graham Sharp (Horse & Groom) both scored maximums.

In the National Singles Play-offs, Eddie Gosling (Colchester) held of a strong challenge from Basildon new boy, Paul Everson, winning 3-2 in a close final. The losing semi-finalists were Phil Brewster (Hatfield Peverel) and Terry Rose (Thameside). A total of 71 Superleague players took part in a great night of darting excellence.

In the Ladies section, Clacton is starting to find the form that won them the title last season. They beat Hatfield Peverel to win the Knockout Cup, and after beating Kelvedon 7-2 recently went to the top of the league for the first time this season. The best game in recent weeks has come from Sue Nye (Witham), winning 3-1 against Lynn Kelly (Braintree) with a 20.04 average. Congratulations to Wayne Mardle on winning through to the semi’s again in PDC World Championships. Let’s hope he goes one better next time and maybe play Colin Lloyd in the final instead of the Quarters, and how close was that 9-darter, eight perfect darts a gnat’s whisker away… great darts. Well done to all our Essex players for an entertaining New Year.

I’m asked many times why we don’t write about certain leagues on these pages. The answer as simple, unless the information is sent to us (e-mail, phone or text) or posted to a website, how can we! Please ask your league secretaries to contact us with darting achievements and general news and we’ll do our utmost to let the rest of Essex know.
