DARTS AROUND ESSEX – July

 

CHAMPION ADLAM!

 

The joint super league’s finals and presentation night concluded with a two sets to one Champion of Champions win for Barry Adlam. Adlam (27.82 average) took the first set 2-1; Steve Johnson (26.04 average) levelled with a 2-1 set win and took the first leg of the deciding set. However, Adlam’s 82 finish in second leg and a clinical last leg gave him the deserved win.

 

The standard of darts from all sections were very high, with the Youth players excelling in the atmosphere and producing some great darts. In the pairs’, Colchester ‘A’s Richard George & Ryan Damant beat Ongar’s Vincent Clarke & Stuart Spencer 2-0.

 

In the triples final, Richard George scored a 180 to help team mates Robert Lang & Craig Vickers beat Canvey ‘C’s James Thompson, Matthew Bryant & Wayne Cooch 2-0. The singles title was won by Ongar’s Ronnie Yates defeating 180 scoring Vincent Clarke 3-2. In the Champion of Champions Craig Vickers came back from two down to retain the title with a 100 game shot in the fifth leg against the unlucky Vincent Clarke.

 

In the Ladies section, it was Clacton’s Viv Dundon who was in top form as she has been as season winning all three title without dropping a leg. Beating Jenny Powell (Braintree) in the Officials Cup, Sandra Dance (Clacton) in the Singles and Amanda Dodd (Braintree) in the Champion of Champions.

 

In the Men’s section, Simon Cook & Paul Holloway (Cressing) were triumphant in the Pairs final with a 3-1 victory over Basildon’s Gary Phipps & Dave Orton. Cressing’s John Mortimer won the Officials Cup 3-0 against Super league chairman Brian Dimmock (Basildon). A tightly fought Rose Bowl final saw Barry Adlam beat Chris Bowring (White Notley) 2-1, both players recording 180’s.

 

The Single’s final saw Colchester’s Kevin Edwards producing a wonderful game of darts to retain the trophy against Brentwood’s Mark McGrath, both scoring a 180 each. Also played was the Mixed Pairs final - Sheila Busby and her grandson, Craig Vickers, defeated Amanda Dodd (Braintree) and Chris Denny (Colchester) 3-2.

 

The evening was also a farewell celebration and thank you to Alan and Gloria Robson who are retiring from active duty to the county, and close friends Fred and Pat Williams joined the celebrations. Finally, Eve Stokes was on hand to receive a cheque for £154 from the Men’s Del Lewis Memorial trophy proceeds, with the winners, Colchester ‘C’ (Andy Cole, Kevin Edwards & Chris Bowring), also donating their winnings.

 

The qualifying players to represent Essex in the Gold Cup are Kathy Fox (Collier Row) and Eddie Gosling (Colchester) (Singles) and Sue Waterman and Carol Pinfold (Colchester) (Ladies Pairs) and Mark Landers & Jason Wiles (Rainham) (Mens Pairs).

Wickford vs. Brentwood

In the ninth annual challenge match between Wickford and Brentwood, Brentwood drew level on four wins each with an 18-12 victory at the Albion Darts and Snooker Club. With both teams suffering from players being unavailable due to Southend and Ingatestone leagues, the teams still produced an entertaining and intriguing contest. Wickford took an early 4-2 lead with Single wins from Dean Johns and Carl Smith (126 game shot), and Pairs’ wins from Garry Phipps & Paul Fincham and Dave Solly & Alan Prosho, Brentwood singles wins came from Mark Gooding and Paul Westcott. However, Brentwood took charge by winning the next five singles and four pairs to take a commanding 11-4 lead at the half way stage. The single wins came from Mark Banham, Darren Blackwood, Marc Yeomans, Jamie Manchester and John Henderson. Pairs wins from Mick & George Harris, Kris Korosec & Phil Daldry, John Sutton & Darren Blackwood and Paul Westcott & Vic Celiz. Gary Phipps stopped the rot with a single win and Kevin Smith & Les Goddard and John Unwin & Martin Excell with Pairs wins for Wickford. Brentwood won four of the next five Singles to give them a 15-8 lead, with George Harris, Graham Hickson, Mick Harris and Julian Murray all recording wins, Dave Solly the sole Wickford triumph. But Wickford was far from finished as they steam rolled the next four games to bring them back to 15-12 with wins from Roger Cocker, Mark Liddicott, Chris Wilson and Martin Excell. It was Mark Banham & Steve Atkins that sealed victory for Brentwood, Mark Gooding & Jamie Manchester winning the final pair, and team Captain John Sutton winning the final Single gave Brentwood a six game winning margin. As usual the game was played in a great sporting manner and both teams will be looking forward to next years challenge.

Essex Youth

Congratulations to the under 18’s who have won the South Section following their final two home results of the season.  Dorset (9-8): The under 18’s won 5-4 with wins from Richard George, Robert Lang, Michael Prior, Ryan Damant and MOM Vincent Clarke (21.78 average); the under 21 girls won 2-1 with Amy Turner and LOM Nicola Patten (14.94 average) the winners; the under 21 males lost out 3-2 with Wayne Cooch and MOM Glenn Crook (22.77 average) the winners.  Suffolk (10-7): The under 18’s won 7-2 with wins from Richard George, Robert Lang, captain Ronnie Yates, Leigh Neary, Ray Ambrose, Michael Prior and MOM Ryan Damant (22.27 average); the under 21 girls lost out 3-0; the under 21 males won 3-2 with Stuart Mortimer, Glenn Crook and MOM Daniel Sare (23.86 average) the winners.

AROUND THE LEAGUE’S

Brentwood Borough & District: In a buoyant atmosphere, finals night part one produced some great finals, the All-in-Singles being the highlight. Both Phil Daldry (Hutton CC) and John Wastenage (Prince of Wales A) treated the spectators to a classic high scoring match in which Daldry won 3-2. In the Captain’s final Barry Edwards (Saxon King B) beat Trevor Williams (Jolly Boys A) 3-0; Peter Wiffen (Brave Nelson B) retained his Secretaries Cup title with a close fought 3-2 contest against Paul Williams (Charlie’s Mob). The Four’s knockout was won 3-1 by Henderson 1 (Jamie Manchester, Marc Yeomans, Mark Gooding & Alan Ware), the runners-up was the Robin Hood (Steve Atkins, Mark Banham, David Deed & Peter Doherty). The Bentley ‘A’ took the Knockout Cup with a 3-1 victory over Railway Hotel. Finals night part two also produced some great performances, with Bobby & Hazel Semple winning the Mixed Pairs Title for an incredible eight time in ten seasons, George Reeves & Pauline Donat finishing runners-up. In the Pairs final, both pairs played great darts with Dave Reynolds & Trevor Brogan (Bentley A) winning 3-2 against Simon Pratt & Peter Tompkins (Railway Hotel). In the divisional singles, Andrew Westcott (Bentley B) beat Rob Goosey (Charlie’s Mob) to win the third division title; Mark Parrish (Harold Wood NC A) was in top form to beat Peter Wiffen (Brave Nelson B) in the second division; and Mark Banham (Robin Hood) held off a strong challenge from White Hart’s Kris Korosec to win the first division title.

Basildon Monday Club: The Del Lewis trophy attracted 64 entries this year, slightly down on last year, and was again played on Yorkshire boards. The semi finals saw Pete Brown (Vange B) defeat Simon Rammage (Bowers B) and Roy Goddard (Bowers T) overcome Alan Carrington (Bowers B). In a closely fought final, Goddard came out on top winning 3-2. £178 was raised for Cancer research on the night, so a big thank you to everyone who helped make it such a big success.   The Individual trophy final saw Carl Smith (Bowers B) defeat team mate Ron Johnson 3 - 2. Alan Beldzik (Bowers C) beat Martin Exell (Albion) 3-0 in the Treasurers trophy final; Brian Kinnane (York F) beat Carl Smith (Bowers B) by the same score in the Captains cup final.  Des Marples made a welcome and successful return to darts after winning his 9-month battle against Leukaemia, by winning the Secretaries trophy. In a keenly fought final, Marples overcame Chris Hudspith (Barleysports) 3-2 hitting two 180's on the way to the final.  The Watts cup final saw Brian Kinnane, Alan Prosho and Ritchie Edhouse (York F) defeat Steve Tovey, Ron Johnson and Steve Johnson by 2-0.  In the leagues premier trophy, the Rumsey cup, the final saw Dave Solly (York F) overcome Ronnie Card (Murrayfield Misfits) 3-0. Solly also went through the entire league season without dropping a leg in all 27 games.  The league has recently heard that their League President, Mr Rumsey M.B.E., F.C.F.I. (Bata) (after whom the Rumsey cup is named after), has passed away at the age of 92. The league sends their thoughts and condolences to all family and friends.

Harlow Industrial Business League  Dan Galloway (White Admiral) beat Phil Cox (Council Club) to win the Secretaries Cup; Stuart Willey (Dusty Miller) beat Bill Woods (Swift) to win the Team Champion Knockout and Bill Woods (Swift) beat Andy Hentall (White Admiral) to win the Captain's Cup.
