 DARTS AROUND ESSEX – NOVEMBER

POSTIES DELIVER!

The "Posties" were triumphant in winning the 2nd Kevin Wells Memorial Triples competition.   A disappointing response saw sixteen teams enter the tournament held once again at the Chelmsford Social Club.

The losing semi-finalists were "Two Ducks & a Pig" (Gary Flynn, Mark Cranham & Tony Course) from Haverhill and local's "Red Lion NLR" (Trevor Willis, Chris Miller & Wayne Joslin). Both finalist were also from the Chelmsford area, and it was the "Posties" (Chris Bowring, Craig Vickers & Ashley Evans) that dominated the final, beating "Wendy Wu's" (Wendy Johnson, Martin Compton & Trevor Grimsey) 2-0.

The event raised £380 for the Essex Air Ambulance, and Kevin Wells' family were at the event; his Mum Rene and Widower Sandra, were on hand to present the trophies. Martin Compton and Wendy Johnson won the additional Pairs beating Gary Flynn & Tony Course. The losing semi-finalists were Craig Vickers & Chris Bowring and Simon Whalley & David Bocking. A big thank you to Simon Whalley who was the highest bidder for the signed PDC dartboard that boosted the charity funds.

Darts Around Essex Inter-league Charity tournament
Ingatestone & District were the victors in the 3rd annual tournament. Yet again Basildon, Brentwood, Ingatestone, Harlow, and Wickford continue to support this great event, with the Ridley's league returning.

A superb field saw a very close contest; group one saw the Ingatestone & District Summer finish top of the pile a point ahead of Wickford & District. Group two it was dominated by the holders, Harlow Business & Industrial, who easily won the group winning 4-2; 6-0 and 6-0. Ingatestone & District edged second spot from Brentwood Borough & District.

The two Ingatestone leagues met in the semis, with the winter league (Andrew Kateley, John Wastenage, Mark McGrath and Ray Curtis) beating the summer league (Andrew Dawson, Kevan Crowe, David Bocking and Dean Willsher) 4-2. In the other semi, Wickford & District (Carl Smith, Dean Johns, Les Goddard and Rick Buck) avenged last year's final defeat by disposing of Harlow Business & Industrial league (Stuart Willey, Peter Brown, Ronnie Green and David Galloway) 5-1. Ingatestone & District took the £100 first prize with a 4-0 victory in the final. Most players and supporters stayed for the Singles knockout that followed, with Dean Johns beating Mark McGrath in a tightly fought final, 2-1.

The losing semi-finalists were Gary Phipps and John Wastenage. I'd like to thank all those players who supported the event, and many thanks to our first prize sponsor, Derek Freeman the new owner of the Little N’ Large Family Club, formally the Albion; and Roy Harvey who helped the event run smoothly although feeling unwell. The event raised a total of £270; "Heart of Darts" will receive £200 and £70 is to be donated to the "Beach Hut Fund".  Next years tournament is already booked for Sunday 25th September, I've reduced the entry fee in the hope that I can tempt a few more Essex leagues to put forward teams.

AROUND THE LEAGUES

Brentwood Summer: Dave Crown & Andrew Westcott (Bentley A) won the Captains and Secretaries knockout, beating the Forge's skipper & secretary Tony Hemmings & Mark Franklin. Paul Sedge (Railway Hotel) was victorious in the Courage Cup, beating Trevor Brogan (Bentley A) 3-1.

Ingatestone & District Summer: Finals night saw some great games, probably the best being the ladies final, which saw Sue Nye (Red Beret) beat Wendy Johnson (Marsham Arms) 3-1.

The Mixed Triples went the distance with the Oddfellows Arms trio, John Hansell, Dave Howgego and Terri Warwick winning 3-2 against Ray Curtis, Darren Blackwood and Sandra Curtis (Rising Sun Dragons). Another close final was the Mixed Pairs, David Deed (Bentley Allstars) and Mandy Ely (White Horse) were 3-2 victors against the husband and wife pairing of Paul & Brenda Sedge (Railway Hotel).

The Bullseye knockout was surprisingly a one-sided affair, as Barry Devenish (Marsham Arms), who'd looked in superb form in the previous rounds, was demolished by high scoring David Bocking (Chequers A) 5-1. In the Men's Singles, it was Rising Sun Dragon's Mark McGrath that dominated the final winning 3-0 against Andrew Dawson (Chequers A).

Basildon Monday: With the league season now four weeks old, Vange 'B' are setting the pace with maximum points. Chalvedon Colts and Bowers 'T' are just a point behind after both teams drew a game with 5th placed York 'E'.

At the other end, Bowers 'C', Castlemayne and Albion have yet to gain a point. Recent high finishes include 130 by Harry Gleed (Bowers 'B'), 143 by Phil Rayner (Bowers 'T') and Pete Brown of Vange 'B' with 164. Steve Johnson of Vange 'B' has had 2 x 14 dart legs and Spencer James of Bowers 'T' had a 13-dart leg in his match against Albion. 24 x 180's have so far been scored.

On a sadder note, Roy Thompson of York 'E' has recently lost his fight with the brain tumour that he has suffered from for these past few months. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
