OCTOBER 2004 REPORTINGATESTONE
WIN BELGIUM CHALLENGE
With
a much-changed squad, Ingatestone travelled to the Zelem Sporthal with
high hopes of making it four wins in a row. With the two squads split in
to two teams, ‘Zelem Team 2’ took on ‘IDDL Team A’. The IDDL took
the first batch of singles 5-1 with 3-0 wins from Laurence Young and John
Wastenage, 3-1 wins from Martin Compton and Mick Horsnell, and a 3-2
victory from Paul Sedge. Zelem’s winner was Peter Doggen beating Reg
Atkins 3-1. Wastenage and Sedge and Kevin Stammers and Dawn Hogan both won
their pair’s, with Doggen and Jacky Vanderheyden winning 3-2 for Zelem.
In the final batch of singles, Compton and Sedge were the IDDL winners
giving the team a 9-6 victory. Doggen, Jacky, Guido and Kris Bervoets won
for Zelem. Meantime on the other board, ‘Zelem Team 1’ shared the
spoils with ‘IDDL Team B’ finishing the first batch of singles level.
Eddie Smith, Matt Doe and Ray Curtis won for IDDL, Dirk Gevers, Danny
Beckx and skipper Steven Steenaerts for Zelem. Tom Reyman and Luc Clemens
and Steenaerts with Wim Bervoets took the first two pairs, with Doe and
Curtis pulling a game back. Having to win four games to avoid defeat in
the final batch of singles, IDDL pulled it off with wins from Smith, Doe,
Curtis and the winning game from Alan Chamberlain. Jochen Toelen and Johan
Eykens were Zelem’s winners for an 8-7 IDDL win. The following night the
IDDL teams swapped boards and again ‘IDDL Team A’ took the singles
5-1, Wastenage, Compton, Young, Sedge and Horsnell all won, Dirk Gevers
was the Zelem winner. Atkins and Chris Boret and Compton and Young won
their pairs, Davy Dekeyser and Reyman the Zelem winner. Toelen and Reyman
won singles as IDDL Team ‘A’ won 11-4. It was the same story as the
night before for IDDL Team ‘B’, sharing the singles with wins from
Doe, Smith and Ray Wood; Zelem had wins for Guido, Jacky and Doggen. Pairs
wins from Ray and Lynne Wood and Doe and Curtis put the team in a strong
position going into the final singles, which were shared with IDDL wins
from Ray Wood, Olly Nye and Doe to give IDDL Team ‘B’ another 8-7
victory. Priscilla Wittemans, Doggen and Jacky had victories. On the final
night, all the players were drawn into mixed teams for a fun knockout in
which Steven Steenaerts Team won 13-10. Although Ingatestone won the
weekend 4-0 and take a 4-0 series lead, Zelem should be proud as many of
their players have improved over the four years which was the main reason
for the challenge. Over the weekend, IDDL scored four 180’s from
Horsnell, Sedge, Compton and Ray Wood, Compton also had the top checkout
with 118; Zelem’s 180’s were from Steenaerts, Toelen, Beckx and
Doggen, with Gevers 107 the top finish. CHARITY
