DARTS AROUND ESSEX – SEPTEMBER REPORT

 

SOLLY LANDS 3RD TITLE

A qualify field battled it out for the 5th Chelmsford Open title, it was Dave Solly that triumphed to claim the £175 first prize sponsored by Ridley’s. The losing Quarter-finalists were John Jennings (Ilford); Richard Ford (Kent); Phil Daldry (Brentwood) and Andrew Kateley (Chelmsford). The losing semi-finalists were Kevin Edwards (Colchester) and Andy Derrick (Tonbridge). In the final, Solly took a commanding three-nil lead in 16-15-11 darts scoring two 180’s in the 3rd, his opponent, Michael Barnard (London) won the next leg before Solly restored his three leg advantage. Barnard took the sixth leg with a 117 checkout, and then missed five darts at doubles allowing Solly to clock out on double ten to secure his third title. Solly also won the most 180’s with six and the furthest lady prize was shared between Yvonne Hall-Wilson (Chelmsford) and Sally Dowell (Kent).  In the money-in and money-out Pairs, the losing semi-finalists were Chelmsford´s Dean Willsher & David Bocking and Andy Derrick & Richard Ford. The final was a superb game with London´s Michael & Brian Barnard being triumphant against Ben Adams & Terry Rose.

HARWICH SUMMER SINGLES GRAND PRIX
The finals of the Impact Toyota Harwich summer singles was played at the end of July at the Little Oakley Memorial Club, with the top 16 qualifiers from the previous six weeks taking part.

Viv Dundon got the night rolling with a 144 shot out in her first leg as she went through to the last eight. Ken Russell scored three 180´s in his first game against the unlucky Mick Chambers who had no answer and Marcus Smith had a 180 and a 140 finish in his first round. Other notable scores came from George Lord 180, Geoff Woolley 180 and Adrian Genery 180. The semi finals were between the top four seeds. The consistent Paul Holloway lost out to Ken Russell 3-2 in a very close game and Adrian Genery beat Marcus Smith 3-0 with Marcus left to ponder on the missed doubles. The final saw some excellent darts from both players. In a very close match in front of a large crowd Ken Russell came out on top 3-2 to take the first prize.

TOURNAMENTS COMING UP IN THE COUNTY

Charity "Darts Around Essex" Inter-League Tournament: Sunday 26th September at the new look “Albion Snooker & Darts Club”, Broadway, Wickford. 11:30 am doors open, all teams register by 12:15 pm, toe the oche 12:45 pm. Entry fee is £32 (£40 on the day) per league of four players, contact Kevin Stammers for more details. Under new management, Derek Freeman will be our host for the event with more sponsorship available but only if the minimum numbers of teams enter. Proceeds split between the “Heart of Darts” & the “Beach Hut” fund.


Kevin Wells Triples: Sunday 3rd October at Chelmsford Social Club, 55 Springfield Road, Chelmsford, CM2 6JG. 11 am doors open, last entry 11:45 am, toe the oche 12:15 pm. Entry fee is £7.50 per threesome. All proceeds going to Charity. Contact the Club Steward 01245 261379 for more details.  

Charity Golf Day: Friday 15th October at Hartswood golf course, Brentwood. £33 for the day; contact Paul Sedge (07736 030528) or Kevin Stammers for details, requires a £10 deposit per player. Open to any player or team that is registered to a dart league in the county. All proceeds going to the “Heart of Darts”.

ESSEX YOUTH

Congratulations to our Essex Youth teams. First, Essex ‘A’ won the Kettering Knockout Cup winning 6-1 in the final against Cambridgeshire, secondly the following weekend; Essex won the East Anglia Cup. The Essex ‘A’ team members were Craig Vickers, Daniel Sare, Ronnie Yates, Richard George, Vinny Clarke, Ray Ambrose, Eli Leftwich. The Essex ‘B’ was unlucky to lose in the first round at Kettering. In the East Anglia Cup, Essex accumulated 91-points to beat Cambridgeshire into second place by 20-points.  The team produced a superb performance to in the double four team round robin, winning all six game; Cambridgeshire 11-10 and 14-7; Norfolk 14-7 and 17-4; Kent 18-3 and 17-4. The Essex team members were Richard George, Vinny Clarke, Ray Ambrose, Jason Vickers, Christopher Ball, David Marsh, James Thompson, Leigh Neary and Patrick Yates.

AROUND THE LEAGUES

Brentwood Summer: Every week division one has a new leader, and when writing this report the Cherry Tree ‘A’ are a point ahead of the White Hart, with the champions Henderson ‘A’ lying a further point behind. White Hart’s Danny Pryke leads the Player of the year table with 21-points, John Wastenage (Prince of Wales A) next with 20-points. Division two has the Bentley ‘A’ top with a seven-point lead, and a game in-hand, over second placed Brave Nelson ‘B’. Four players share top spot in the players table; Peter Wiffen, Andy Westcott, Steve Wackett and Paul Williams. The Rising Sun lead the Plough by four points to top division three and Henderson ‘B’ top division four from the Forge. In the divisional knockout competitions, the White Hart who beat the Railway Hotel won division one; the Bentley ‘A’ beat Jolly Boys ‘A’ to win division two; Railway ‘B’ took the division three title beating the Rising Sun; and the Alexandra beat the Jolly Boys ‘B’ to win the fourth division title.

Basildon Club: The semi finals of the summer cup saw two close games that went down to the wire. Chalvedon Colts narrowly saw off the challenge of York ´E´ 4-3, Vange ´B´ defeated Bowers ´B´ by the same score. In the final Vange ´B´ took the title with a 4-0 win.  The Charity cup took place at the York club with thirteen teams of four players entering, raising £116.50 on the night. The final will be contested by a team from Vange ´B´ and one from Chalvedon Colts next June on our finals night with the winning team choosing which charity benefits from the money raised.

Ingatestone & District: With only two week of league games remaining, the Chequers ‘A’ are favourites to retain the first division title with the Rising Sun Dragons runners-up. Andrew Kateley heads all player tables. In division two, the title in still open between four teams, although Marsham Arms may just hold on to top spot from the Railway Hotel, Crown and White Bear. John Wastenage heads all player tables in the division. It will go down to leg difference on who wins division three, with the Bird Cage and Oddfellows Arms joint top on points, and the same can be said for division four between Chelmsford Social Club and the Victoria ‘A’, with the possibility of the Ship getting involved. The Cock Tavern ‘B’ have finished bottom for the Wooden Spoon. In the Quadro Board Pairs, an excellent and tense final was won by Gary Robinson and David Brown (Cock Tavern A) beating Steve Atkins and Mark McGrath (Rising Sun Dragons) 4-3. The losing semi-finalists were John Hansell & Terri Warwick (Oddfellows Arms) and John Wastenage & George Dixon (Crown).
