DARTS AROUND ESSEX – MARCH
2005 REPORT
The
1st Wickford Open was a great huge success with 132 entries
chasing the £300 first prize. Great darts were displayed all day with a
total of 35-recorded 180’s scored, Scott Richardson (Sussex) hitting ten
and Lionel Sams eight.

The
high standard of darts was in evidence from the start, because within
twenty minutes of the start, Kevin Graham (Canvey) had checked out on 161
and scored a maximum, his opponent Martin Compton (Chelmsford) scored two
maximums. Highest checkout on the day was 170, which was achieved by both
Scott Richardson and Steve Maish (Southend).

Sally
Dowell (Kent) pictured lost in the last 32 to win the furthest lady prize money of
£25. Winning through to the Quarterfinals were Steve Maish who beat local
favourite Dave Solly (Basildon); Lionel Sams (London) beat Mark McGrath
(Ingatestone) in a tight contest 3-2; Brian Kinnane (Basildon) beat Neil
Bunten; Paul Everson (Woolwich) beat Dave Phillips (Ingatestone) 3-1; John
McFall (Canvey) beat Dougie Wallace; Scott Richardson beat Terry Rose
(Thameside) 3-2; Kevin Turner (Basildon) won 3-0 against local man Les
Atkins; and Paul Doherty (London) made up the final eight after beating
Dean Johns (Basildon).
The
Quarters continued to produce superb darts as Steve Maish beat Lionel Sams
3-2; Paul Everson beat Brian Kinnane 3-1; Scott Richardson had a 3-2
victory over John McFall; and Paul Doherty beat Kevin Turner 3-0.
Steve
Maish missed doubles that allowed Paul Everson to win through to the final
with a 3-0 win, and Scott Richardson joined Everson with a clinical 3-1
victory over Paul Doherty.
The
final itself was a cat and mouse affair with both players dominating then
missing vital shots out; Scott scoring another maximum and a 112 finish,
however it was Paul Everson that held his nerve to emerge as the 4-3
victor.
Colin
Lloyd was on hand to present the prize money to the winners and
runners-up.
The
Little n LARGE Club was the perfect venue and a big thank you to joint
sponsors Courage Brewery and Derek Freeman (Club owner).
A
Pairs knockout followed the singles final, with a total of 38 pairs taking
part. The losing quarterfinalists were Martin Compton & Simon Whalley,
John Hayter & Richard Watering, Dave Livett & Lionel Sams and Dan
Day & John Barnard.

Ron Clarke & Scott Richardson won through to the final with a 3-1
victory over Paul Sedge & Mark McGrath; and it was Carl Smith &
Rick Buck who won the other semi with a 3-0 win against Paul Doherty &
Dougie Wallace.
The
Sussex pair won the final 3-0. It’s planned to hold another open this
year (May), look out for details. Finally, big thanks to those who made
the day go smoothly, Roy Harvey, Dave Birch, Martin Prior, Ann Turner and
me (Kevin Stammers).

It
is with great sadness that I report the passing away of Derek William
Little (Delboy), who died of a stroke on 27th January, aged
65. Derek has played in the Basildon area for many years, mainly for the
Ghyllgrove Club, more recently a member of the Vange ‘B’ team in the
Monday league. All players that knew him send commiserations to his
family; all will miss him greatly.

Red Lion have a slight lead over the Hutton in the first division, the
Royal Oak ‘B’ with a 18-point lead look to have won the second
division with 2-weeks to go. Mark Robinson has the top checkout (155);
Chris Blumson & John Wastenage each have three maximums recorded.
Brentwood

locally based trust providing sponsored free holidays of a lifetime in
Blackpool for children with life threatening illnesses and their families.
Brentwood
Borough & District:
With only four league weeks to go, the Cherry Tree has a 4-point lead over
the White Hart. The Prince of Wales ‘A’ has a 15-point advantage in
division two. Second spot is a tussle between the Rising Sun, Spread
Eagle, Saxon King ‘A’ and Brave Nelson. Division 3 is between three
teams, Henderson ‘B’, Saxon King ‘B’ and Chequers Social.
Qualifying for the Division 1 Singles final in April were Steve Johnson

be an all Henderson ‘B’ affair with Alan Brindley taking on Mick
Whitty. This months annual challenge match verses Wickford has been
postponed until November.
