Dart players from all over Essex were still reeling from the news that Del Lewis, one of the 'gentlemen of darts' had lost his fight against cancer.

Playing for many leagues over the past years he was popular with all his fellow players and they were overjoyed when his dream of representing his County in the Premier Division was fulfilled.

Del always had a kind word for everyone, he was patient with the younger players and would always listen to the words of experience related to him by the older playing members also.  His popularity was obviously fired by his genuine interest in others.

It is such a pity that he shut himself away from his friends towards the end of his illness at a time when he obviously needed them.  This was Del, he did not want anyone to be distressed by his appearance - something that only those who have seen loved ones die of this dreadful disease have experienced.  His thoughts for other peoples feelings were paramount.

Rest in Peace Del - we have lost a true friend and a great sportsman.
